How can I transfer my existing Time Machine backup to my new My Cloud Home drive

I feel like I’m missing something here.

I’ve tried to follow the Apple instructions, but I get the message “This volume is the wrong format for a backup” when I try to drag the “backups.backupdb” to the volume “TimeMachineBackup” created by the WD app.

The volume appears as a choice in the TimeMachine preferences for “Select Disk”, but i haven’t tried selecting it, since I want to retain my past backups, not start a new one

I’m on Mac OS 10.13.3.
