How can I tell if any programs are running with my external drive?

Can you give us some more information? What programs? There are:
WD Utilities
WD Security
WD Discovery
WD Backup
WD Smartware
Open one. It should respond with a screen. And clicking on an option should do something. Or go to Computer Management/Services and Applications or call up Task Manager Ctrl&Alt&Del.

Do you have problem?

I don’t what programs are running preventing WD Smartware from closing when requested.

HI,

I never had a problem stopping Smartware screen, but it will continue without the screen. Use Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Del). You can find WD processors that running and maybe one for Smartware. Disable it. Be careful though. Not sure what does what.
