Help - Green 2TB drive reports ALL SECTORS bad!

Hi,

Caviar Green 2TB drive here: WDC WD20EADS-32S2B0, firmware revision 01.00A1.

It still shows up to BIOS and spins up and doesn’t sound abnormal.

But, upon trying to access ANY sector on the disk, ANYWHERE, it reports it as a medium error/bad sector. In linux:

Apr 17 21:32:23 sysresccd kernel: [777.175203] Buffer I/O error on device sdb, logical block 0
Apr 17 21:32:23 sysresccd kernel: [777.175212] Buffer I/O error on device sdb, logical block 1
Apr 17 21:32:23 sysresccd kernel: [777.175214] Buffer I/O error on device sdb, logical block 2
Apr 17 21:32:23 sysresccd kernel: [777.175216] Buffer I/O error on device sdb, logical block 3
Apr 17 21:32:23 sysresccd kernel: [777.183532] sd 4:0:0:0: [sdb] Unhandled sense code
Apr 17 21:32:23 sysresccd kernel: [777.183535] sd 4:0:0:0: [sdb] Result: hostbyte=DID_OK driverbyte=DRIVER_SENSE
Apr 17 21:32:23 sysresccd kernel: [777.183538] sd 4:0:0:0: [sdb] Sense Key : Medium Error [current]
Apr 17 21:32:23 sysresccd kernel: [777.183540] sd 4:0:0:0: [sdb] Add. Sense: Unrecovered read error
Apr 17 21:32:23 sysresccd kernel: [777.183543] sd 4:0:0:0: [sdb] CDB: Read(10): 28 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 08 00
Apr 17 21:32:23 sysresccd kernel: [777.183549] end_request: critical target error, dev sdb, sector 0

Trying to retrieve ANY sector, immediately returns this error, no matter what sector is accessed, and the error always returns without any delay whatsoever.

Every so often, I hear the heads make a normal sound - this drive has always done that, which I’m guessing is the algorithms that keep the heads moving to different parts of the disk?

Why would this drive suddenly fail so completely, when it doesn’t seem to be exhibiting any outward signs of physical problems (like clicking heads or odd noises)??

Please help?

Note, the drive is 3 years old [April 2010] and has run for about 50-75% duty for that time, but up until now it has exhibited absolutely no signs of any problems, and the SMART monitoring tools have detected no problems. In fact, SMART can still be queried on the drive and still reports no problems; still shows 0 reallocated sectors and all parameters normal!

I do have a (relatively) recent data backup, a month or two old. IT still however baffles me that this drive failed so spectacularly and so suddenly. I’ve been using WD drives for YEARS and have never seen this from any drive, and I have drives that have run 6-7 years of 100% uptime service and never had a problem, which I still use today for test projects.

Hello fmillion,

As a recommendation, you can try testing the drive with DLG Tool

If the drive fails the test, you might need to try using a data recovery software to get the information out of the drive.
