Hard disk head replacement

I have a wd easystore 2 tb.it fall down.now it dosent work.
How can i buy a hard disk head for replacement.

Hi @Luso,

Have you opened a Support Case? If not opened, for more information, please contact the WD Technical Support team for the best assistance and troubleshooting:

Hello @Luso,
I’m sorry to hear about the situation with your WD Easystore 2TB hard drive. Accidental drops can sometimes result in damage to the internal components of the drive, including the read/write heads. Replacing the hard disk head is a complex and delicate process that typically requires specialized equipment and expertise.

Instead of attempting a DIY replacement of the head, I strongly recommend reaching out to WD Technical Support for guidance. They can provide you with the best advice on how to proceed.

While I understand that you’re looking for a solution, it’s important to note that hard drive repairs often require professional handling to avoid further damage and data loss. Opening the drive yourself could potentially worsen the situation.

If the data on the drive is important to you, I recommend letting the professionals assess the damage and determine the best course of action. They might be able to offer options for data recovery or assist you in replacing the drive if necessary.

I wouldn’t bother with WD’s tech support. They will undoubtedly refer you to their data recovery “partners”, who will charge you 3 times as much as other competent DR shops. Typical costs in your case would be $1K, although the cost may be much higher if the heads have scratched the platters.

The chances of a first-time DIY-er pulling off a head swap would be very small. For a start, there are important donor matching criteria, and the operation must be performed inside a filtered “clean cabinet”. Preferably you would use proper head swap tools.

An added complication is SMR. If your drive is one of these, special care must be exercised to prevent data loss, even if your head swap succeeds.

Thank you for your input.
What I have in the drive is not important to justify paying 1.000

Nobody sells heads. You need to buy a matched donor drive.

They may make you rethink your attempt.

Thank you for the info.I’m going to look at.
Appreciate your help.
Very kind

I can find the one i have in your list.

There are several characters in the DCM that you should try to match. You should also match the full model number, plus you should match the head map.

Just be warned that you have a very low chance of success. If you want your data, you should really consider professional services. If you try and fail, the costs will double or triple.

Your model belongs to the Pebbleb family.

I’m not sure, but I believe this should be the appropriate tool:

There are much cheaper versions of this tool from other manufacturers.

If you have a 3D printer, you can make your own:

If you are very careful …
