G-Raid with apple disk utility

I have a G Raid with 2 4 TB Drives. I would like to use a few additional hard drives as an off line archive. Is it possible to take the drives out of the unit and formatted them in a USB dock with apples disk utility, and then use them in the G raid unit as a JOBD. I would like to rotate 4 disk keeping two off site. I would also like to be able to access the drives with a USB dock or the G raid unit as a fail safe .Thanks
