Front of Case White Light is Animated - What Does it Mean

Is there an explanation of the different white light pulsing sequences on the case front?  Sometimes there is a solid bar, a chasing light bottom to top, a pulsing solid bar, a static small portion about a inch long etc, etc…

What is happening on the drive or network corresponding to these light effects?
