if somthin goes wrong with a WDC my passport firmware update would it completely ruin my drive?
It could. Personally I wouldn’t mess with it unless you are having problems and need the fix in update. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it.

also, as an added insight, always back up the data before updating firmware.
hi… my firmware update is successful, then i tried to install wd software upgrader. but it’s unsuccessful with a system notification erroe code 1603… can anyone help me with this please?
I would email support and see if they know. it is christmas time over there, but they should respond.
