External USB disks show 0 KB Free of 0 KB

I got a WD My Cloud 4TB running v04.05.00-342 firmware. I wanted to extend its capacity by an external drive connecting to the USB port, but whatever USB drive, stick I plug into in whichever format I always get the message “0 KB Free of 0 KB”. I tried all the possible solutions that I found on the forum - different drives, different formatting, resetting, and so on, but no results. Any ideas?

Two suggestions. Remove/delete all existing partitions on the USB drive. Then repartition it with a single partition and format that single partition for NTFS. Use a powered USB hub if using a portable USB hard drive, or use a powered USB external desktop hard drive.

Also note that some USB hard drives feature hardware encryption. If that encryption feature is enabled the USB hard drive may not work with or be recognized by the My Cloud.
