Hi,
For information:
My copy of Data Lifeguard is dated 2016 and still runs fine. The Smart utility includes some 20 items including Spin Time.

If you’re experiencing difficulties erasing your WD external hard drive and receiving an erase error, there are a few troubleshooting steps you can try:

  1. Ensure that the external hard drive is properly connected to your computer. Sometimes, a loose or faulty connection can cause errors during the erasing process.

  2. Check the file system of the external hard drive. If the file system is corrupted or damaged, it can cause issues when trying to erase the drive. You can use disk management tools built into your operating system (such as Disk Utility on macOS or Disk Management on Windows) to check and repair the file system if necessary.

  3. Verify that you have the necessary permissions to perform the erase operation. On some systems, you may need administrative privileges or specific user permissions to erase a drive. Make sure you have the correct privileges and try again.

  4. Attempt to erase the drive using a different computer or operating system. This can help determine if the issue is specific to your current setup.

  5. If none of the above steps work, you can try using third-party data erasure tool to erase the external hard drive. There are various tools available, such as BitRaser File Eraser, which can help you erase storage devices.

  6. If the issue persists, it’s possible that there may be a hardware problem with the external hard drive itself. In this case, you may need to contact the WD support team or consider taking the drive to a professional data recovery service for further assistance.

Remember that erasing a hard drive will permanently delete all data on the drive, so make sure you have a backup of any important files before proceeding with the erase operation.
