Does this device play in 16X9 format

I notice this device has a zoom in and out feature, but can you configure it to play videos in the 16X9 letterbox format? Thanks.

Not sure what you mean. If you play 16:9 videos and you’re viewing on a 4:3 display, yes, it will be letterboxed.

This isn’t the blind leading the blind here. If you don’t know the answer, please don’t respond.

lol. I think Tony is a little confused as to what you mean, like I am.

If you have 16x9 set in the WD options and the file you are playing has a resolution of 16x9 letterbox size, that will be the result you will get on the screen ??

Nobody will be able to respond, since there’s no such technical thing as “16:9 letterboxed format”, so unless we know what the heck you’re talking about, we can’t answer the question.  Letterboxing is either done at the time the video is encoded, or it is done by the playback device.  Some discs incorrectly label “anamorphic widescreen” as “letterboxed”, but it isn’t a format.

As Tony says, any anamorphic 16:9 video will have letterboxing on a 4:3 display, and it will occupy the entire screen on a 16:9 display.

Likewise, 4:3 video will have pillarboxing on a 16:9 display, and it will occupy the entire screen on a 4:3 display.

If the file doesn’t have anamorphic content, but instead has the mattes encoded in the video stream, then it will have letterboxing and/or pillarboxing on both types of display, since the mattes are included in the video file, and not created by the playback device, and won’t fill either screen entirely.

Anamorphic videos in other ratios will also have letterboxing and/or pillarboxing, when displayed in either 4:3 or 16:9, to avoid distorting the image.

Although there are zoom settings, there is no setting to automatically make any video always fill the screen with no letterboxing or pillarboxing.

Example1:  “Star Wars”

  • Disc 1 “Special Edition” is anamorphic widescreen, but not 16:9 content
  • Disc 1 displays letterboxed on a 4:3 display
  • Disc 1 displays letterboxed on a 16:9 display, but not pillarboxed
  • Disc 2 “Theatrical Release” is _ not _ anamorphic
  • Disc 2 displays letterboxed on a 4:3 display
  • Disc 2 displays letterboxed AND pillarboxed on a 16:9 display

Example 2: “Flight 666”

  • Both disc 1 and disc 2 are 16:9 content
  • Both discs display letterboxed on a 4:3 display
  • Both discs occupy the full screen on a 16:9 display

There is no automatic function to attempt to make Disc 2 of “Star Wars” attempt to fill the entire width of the screen on 16:9, nor is there an automated function to zoom and crop the sides until the letterboxing is removed from the top and bottom, when playing other ratios such as 2.35:1

We don’t really know what the question is so it would difficult to respond correctly.

You may also find that courteous replies with more information would bring better results.
