Disk Failure due to PCB/Firmware?

Disk is no longer working. ntfsfix can see MFT but doesn’t seem to get much info from drive, cannot mount or interact with the partition from Windows or Linux. Disk was used in Windows DVR.

Hi,

You could run test using Data Lifeguard Diagnostics tool to determine the health status of drive:

https://support-en.wd.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/6226

Ran SMART short test. SMART still indicates PASS but disk is unusable.

(x3)$ sudo hdparm -t /dev/sdc

/dev/sdc:
Timing buffered disk reads: 8 MB in 4.57 seconds = 1.75 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 24 MB in 5.06 seconds = 4.75 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 14 MB in 4.67 seconds = 3.00 MB/sec

$ sudo smartctl -t short /dev/sdc
$ sudo smartctl -a /dev/sdc

Is it possible to reload the drive firmware or replace the PCB? If data can not be recovered due to SED, I am not overly concerned. I have purchased over 10 WD Purple 3TB+ drives and would like to know if this bug can be worked around. Further, I’m surprised a virtual monopoly can get away with not selling spare parts?

I am also interested to know if WD Purple drives use device managed shingled magnetic recording and whether it is possible to enable host management with a firmware update. Or, at least expose TRIM command. I ran hdparm -I on my crashed drive and it does not report TRIM support. (This is critical for performance in server applications, which are the use case for my other 10+ WD Purple disks.)

I am aware only certain sizes of Red drives are affected. The bulk of my drives are 6TB model and a few 3TB model.
