Disconnect 12V power but leave USB connected - ok?

Is it save to turn off the WD Elements drives’ power (disconnect 12V plug) but leave the drives constantly connected by USB to 5V? For me, these are rarely used backup drives. I don’t want to leave them in standby (they spin up at boot time, make noise and slow down the boot process).

Hi @dtmr,

Have you opened a Support Case? If not opened, for more information, please contact the WD Technical Support team for the best assistance and troubleshooting:https://support-en.wd.com/app/ask

Yeah, i’ve been doing it for years (about 15 Years, no issues)

As long as you safely eject them in Windows or shutdown your PC before disconnecting the power, it’ll be fine leaving the USB plugged in.

Don’t just turn off the power if your PC is still on … cause it could case data corruption.
