Device Owner Access to Other User folders

Why can’t the device owner have access to all the user folders? The device owner is the person who purchased the device and is ultimately responsible for the device and how it is being used.

If I created an account for someone I know, even though I know them, I still want to make sure they aren’t doing something questionable my device. Why is WD preventing me from being cautious. I just want to monitor what is on my drive and if there is something questionable, I can act on it - that’s the responsible thing. I think I should have that right. At least give this access to the device owner!

This is not a traditional NAS and is more intended for family use IMO. the way the device is designed is all users have their own private user space. if you want more of a traditional NAS with users, shares, permissions etc I would suggest looking at the regular My Cloud line. I also have the PR4100 which is great.

Yes, I know about the regular My Cloud lines. I have one also. But if you make a device that allows a user (device owner) to create other users, which pretty much allows them to do whatever they want on your device, without your knowledge, then there’s something wrong with that, and I would like to know what their thinking was in doing something like that. Why even bother giving the device owner that ability then. Take away that ability away then, and it will be an even less traditional NAS.

Here’s an example, if I have a son (or anyone for that matter) and I create an account for him. He doesn’t know any better and puts a bunch of ■■■■ on it (maybe pirated movies, music, porn, whatever), and shares it with the world, unknown to me. That’s my son, and he doesn’t know any better, and thinks it’s cool. I have absolutely no idea that stuff is on the device and cannot ask.

WD really should consider allowing at least the device owner to see the content in other user folders.
