Computer won't recognize 320g

After buying my external wd in 2007, I experienced a problem within a year, as the Computer failed it’s scheduled back-up.  Now I wish to install it again, the computer won’t recognize it.  I suspect it’s a simple solution, which I unfortunately, cannot solve. Any ideas?
