Can't write to my Passport for Mac

Just bought a brand new TB Passport for Mac. It shows up on the desktop, says it’s formatted for Mac in disk utility, also says there is 850MB of data ON the disk, says I can read/write, but won’t let me write. I try to erase the disk and it comes up with an error and can’t erase it.

Should I return it???
