I formatted my WD My book essential today, and after that I redownloaded all the appropriate files. When I go to copy and paste them into my hard drive, I have to first unlock the hard drive, and then it tells me there is not enough room to paste the files. How do I fix tihs?

Try removing the password protection and then write zeros on the drive.
After that, you will need to create a new partition on the drive.
