I have a 1TB My Passport Ultra with USB.
I use it almost exclusively for backups.
Just today I got “fatal device hardware error” while trying to do backups of my other drives. Was working fine yesterday.
Any ideas?

Fatal device hardware error means the drive has gone bad. Just try to recover the data and apply for the RMA of the drive if it is in under warranty period.
