Does anyone know if it is possible using WD Smartware to backup from one Passport drive to a second Passport?

No, Smartware can only use fixed drives as a source drive. To copy/backup in your case, I would just use a file manager like Windows Explorer or similar and drag/drop or copy/paste.
Not what [Deleted] at WD said. See the following email I received.
Dear George Givens,
Thank you for contacting Western Digital Customer Service and Support. My name is [Deleted].
In regards of your concerns I would inform you that is possible to use a My Passport as a backup source and another My Passport as a backup target. In this case you would need to connect both drives directly to the computer, in the home tab under the computer icon you would be able to see a drop-down menu, here select the My Passport you want to use as a backup source, and in the right hand side of the screen select the My Passport you want to use as a backup target. Once this is done access the Backup tab and click on enable backup.
If you have any further questions, please reply to this email and we will be happy to assist you further.
Sincerely, Stephanie Western Digital Service and Support http://support.wdc.com
Hmm, never worked for me. Maybe something new?
That said personally I’d use copy/Paste in such scenario anyway.
I would like for it to be automated. I know I can use other software but I don’t want to have install yet another program.
One thing I would be careful of is that having Smartware on continuous backup will probably stop you ejecting the MyPassport drives (as they will be continuously accessed by Smartware). If that happens you’ll need to disable the backup (or possibly close Smartware completely) before you can disconnect the drives.
In such a scenario I would be careful of this and not just disconnect the drives, as you could end up corrupting them and risking your data.
Thank you for your insight. I will be doing manual backups.
