All files in Documents on Mac disappeared!

Hi,
I plugged in my passport to do a back up and I just opened my finder on my mac to search a few documents while it was backing up. I didn’t open anything because when I clicked on my documents folder there was NOTHING in it. I thought maybe this was because everything was syncing. I ejected the passport and, nothing. None of my files are on my computer or in my passport. What do I do? How did this happen and where are my files?

As a recommendation, try using a data recovery software to see if you can get your files from the drive.
