Now click the link in your post or this one, The original link has excess info at the end.

That’s odd.  “Permission denied” sounds like your firewall is blocking access.  The link works fine for me from three different computers on three different networks at three different locations.

I have the same problem with the same 4TB WD Disk but Eathernet connection

The problem happened in the same time

Any solution please please please

Hi,

I have logged a support call for the same problem.

How long usually it takes to get support?

Barwani - when you say you have “the same problem,” do you mean that you are unable to access your data on an external WD drive from a computer running MacOS 10.9 (Mavericks)?  I can only talk about my experience.  I got an initial support call from WD in 2-3 days.  They remote-accessed my computer and ran some diagnostics.  If your drive is still under warranty, WD may offer you a replacement.  In some cases, WD has also offered data recovery, which is not part of their standard warranty.  I would allow a few weeks for drive replacement and/or data recovery.

For those of you waiting for the recovery results of my WD My Book Studio Edition II 6TB RAID 0 which was erased and renamed to MyBook:

Kroll Ontrack Germany had the drive for two months. No directory structure at all and all files have been renamed. A quick browse shows that many recovered files cannot be read.

Yes, like everyone else, experienced the in an instant data loss.

I have tried various commercially available data recovery software including:

• Data Rescue 3

• Kroll’s OnTrack Easy Recovery

• Wondershare Data Recovery

• FileRecovery for Mac

• Disk Drill

With exception of of Data Rescue, none were able to recover the directory/file structure. Although Data Rescue 3 did offer a directory/file structure, none of the files were recoverale. But files with random/generic file names under the “Reconstructed” folder were recoverable. Like everyone else, able to recover but without identity as to what is recovered.

Then I read Calpike’s post. I quote the relevant lines.

The better news is that substantially all of my important files were apparently restored completely.  They have file names and most appear intact and usable.

Ok, tell us Calpike , what was the software that they used? Trade secret notwithstanding, there are too many (both those here and others) – more than a critical mass, who are either willing/able to pay or in need to use for themselves the software or technique on their own. (I include myself in the latter group.)

Find out and tell us what and how did they recover the data with file names, please

Thank you.

The same also happened to me, 3TB lost when I just connected today, the disk only had about 100GB free.

It was fine a few weeks ago (WITH Maverick).

I never installed any WD files, just wiped it to HFS/Journaled/unenctypted (on my MBP from 2008, way before Maverick, years ago)

It’s a My Book Essential 3TB, USB3 (not long after USB3 was out)

Are there any ways to recover, has anyone been successful?

You can see some screen shots here:

Is anyone aware of any professional data recovery specialists, who actually managed to recover one of these particular drives?

Ironically, I had just bought yet another MyBook 3TB, to copy the files over to, just in case. Seems I was just one step too late for that.

So now I have two bookshelf placeholders … a two years old and a brand new “My Book”.

Hi B74AA:

Datamechanix was able to recover almost all of my data.  From your screen shots, it’s not clear to me that your problem is the same as mine, but here’s the contact info:

I am in Hong Kong so it’s a bit far away from me. I am dealing with a local company about this, and they say they have found 1.8TB of data which is about right. They should be able to recover it, but it will cost me 900 USD (without hard disk).

I am not sure what to do, when I get it back - when I plug it into my Mac again, OS X 10.9.3, will it wipe it again? I cannot afford to pay 900 USD and wait for a week, every time I connect it, so I think the first thing I am going to do is to get a non-WD hard disk to put it on as the first thing I do (yes, the backup disk is also one of the WD external 3.0 USB disks, I got this hard disk just BEFORE the other one died - the irony is almost funny)

B74AA,

First, my understanding is that the drive is basically “bricked.”  So any data that is recovered will be restored to another drive and your original can be used as a door stop.  My recovered data was shipped to me on a brand new drive (another WD).  I didn’t ask for return of the old drive.  So, you should confirm whether they will be restoring your data to the old drive.

Second, if you delete all WD software from your Mac, there should be no issue with any WD drive being corrupted by the same mechanism.  Reading through the early posts to this thread, you’ll see that most problems were apparently due to an incompatibility between WD software (e.g., WD Drive Manager) and Apple OS10.9 “Mavericks”.  Whether Apple or WD are “more” at fault is debatable, but most of the problems reported can be traced back in one way or another to upgrading to OS 10.9 “Mavericks” while having WD software installed and a WD drive attached.

From my own experience, I had two identical WD drives and two Apple Mac computers both running Mavericks.  Only the drive that was attached to the Mac with WD software installed failed.  The other drive, which was attached to a Mac withOUT WD software installed, continues to hum along to this day.

Best of luck.

Bob

I thought I could share my bit of experience on the matter. I have a 1TB dual drive as well and about 2 years ago I had the same issues with that drive. At first I thought it was just a matter of overheating since when it happened I was still in Athens Greece and it was summer with temps of 40 degrees celsius and more, so I hooked on top of the drive a small fan to see if that does something. Unfortunately the drive kept on failing on me after 20 or so min of operation so I figured that there was something wrong with the hardware and having in mind that it is passively cooled, some of the components inside the drive must have failed. So I decided to open up and see wh\t is in there that could be faulty and as soon as I got acces to the controller, there they were… various electrolytic capacitors. And based on my experience on how these guys cannot stand heat I decided to change them all and that did the trick. As soon as I hooked it back on my computer I was able to get access to all my files and the drive would stay alive always on for another couple of years - that is now that has failed again.

Looks like its a Mavericks issue

not a problem with the Studion II

Thanks for reposting that 2013 article.

My recollection is that non-WD drives (La Cie specifically) had a Mavericks issue in that they would not mount, but there was no data loss and the drive continued to function.  That is, if you plugged one into a non-Mavericks computer it worked fine.  It was the unique troika of having a WD drive, WD software, and Mavericks that resulted in an unusable drive and potential data loss.

I’m still running Mavericks on one computer with a WD drive attached (but no WD software) and all is well.  I’m running Yosemite on another computer with a WD drive attached (but no WD software) and have had no problems.

For me, the critical element was the presense of WD software.  It’s probably just fine now, but after one bad experience I’m scared to have any WD software on any of my computers.

I’d like to contribute my story if I could.

Have a 2TB MyBook Essential chock full of videos, raw photo files, important documents. Plugged in the drive one day and bam, partition gone, replaced with “MyBook” and “EFI” partitions, all empty.

I eventually tried a piece of software called Yodot , which was able to find the name of my lost partition, “MacDrive3”, as well as the starting sector for the partition. It recovered about 50% of the folder structures and files. I noticed however, that all folders created in 2014 could not be recovered completely. Instead, they were dumped into a folder called JPGs and had their filenames scrambled.

I called WD and they are going to try setting up data recovery for me. I’m really hoping they can recover my folder structures as there are over 16000 files that I’ve lost.
