Adding 2nd Drive...But before I do

I am new to this product, and have only used a NAS before as a user, at work, never deployed or owned one.
I have an EX4100 and 1x6TB disk. I have purchased a 2nd 6TB disk, and would like to insert it and create a raid 1 mirror.
2, related, questions.

  1. Is there any way of doing this without losing the data already on Disk 1, or do I have to back this up to a third device and redownload it later?
  2. I am currently using it as a plex server, so if I do have to format it, will I need to go through and install all the apps again? (That is, does the format reset it to factory settings?)
