Access WD120EMFZ-11A6JA0 HDD plater

How do you open up the WD 12TB Elements HDD to expose the heads? There are no screws on the bottom of the HDD.

Hi @Rob2023,

Have you opened a Support Case? If not opened, for more information, please contact the WD Technical Support team for the best assistance and troubleshooting:

Yes, I have.

It’s a helium model. These are welded shut. You need to peel them with a can opener. I assume you don’t care about your data or your warranty and you’re just wanting to satisfy your curiosity?

I care about the data but not the warranty. The data is not that important and definitely worth the ”$399 up to $2800” to recover the data from a 3d party company.

I think the issue I have is a stuck head reader. I have to remove the cover and reset the head to recover the data. I know there is a potential once I release the helium cover to get at the screws that the data may be un-accessible. I will give it a try. Any tips or ideas before I try?

Thanks
