A faked wd2003FYYS

In china,somebody bought a faked WD2003FYYS

the pictures:

in this picture, you can see this faked wd2003fyys’s firmware is 01.00A01, but the real wd2003fyys’s firmware is 01.00D01.

The faked wd2003fyys was made by a wd caviar green.

I just want to tell something and hope wd can solve the problem.

I can’t see any pictures. Can you post direct links to the photos and to the original web pages?

Anyway, ISTM that it would be easier to fake a Caviar Black. AIUI, the Green model rotates at 5900 RPM.

can you see the pictures now?

this is the original web pages, you can see.

Thanks. I can now see both the original web page and the images on this forum. I believe it takes some time for your uploaded images to be approved.

As for the fake, the huge disparity in data transfer rates is obviously suspicious, but the clincher in my mind is the fact that the fake is spinning at 5900 RPM whereas the RE4 is spinning at 7200 RPM. This is evident in HD Tune’s access time graphs.

Notice that the spread of data points in the fake access time graph is about 10-11 msec wide, whereas the RE4 graph is about 8 msec wide. This corresponds to the time required for one complete revolution.

I believe the “fakes” are probably RE4-GP green drives. According to WD’s spec sheets, the WD2003FYYS RE4 drive spins at 7200 RPM and has a maximum sustained transfer rate of 138 MB/s, whereas the WD2002FYPS spins at 5900 RPM (“IntelliPower”) and has a transfer rate of 110 MB/s.

I know that WD sometimes uses two different platter densities in the same model. Here are two related threads where a user measured vastly different transfer rates for two WD6402AAEX drives:

i found the fireware was the biggest different.

i checked the RE4 2TB’s fireware is 01.00D01

the green 2TB’s firewareis 01.00A01

in china,the price of RE4 2TB is about 2000rmb(294$)

the price of green 2TB(wd20ears) is about 899rmb(132$)

the price of RE4-GP 2TB is about 2000rmb(294$)

the faked re4,you can check the warranty, but the speed is not real re4

Thanks for that.

BTW, there are also Seagate fakes in the marketplace. For example, Seagate’s ES.2 and 7200.11 drives are identical in appearance and performance (?), so you can convert the Barracuda version to the enterprise version simply by updating the firmware.

i don’t know the seagate’s problem.

i just saw these things a few days ago, the man wanted to buy re4,but he finally paid 284$ for the green one.what a pity.

in my view, i just wish the wdc can do something to prevent it
