2020 NAS Beta program - features wish list

Hello everyone,

@WDStaff just announced a new beta program apparently for all My Cloud NAS (including MCH - which is now considered as a NAS by WD) : https://community.wd.com/t/my-cloud-nas-software-beta-program/253786

Hopefully it is good news.

Maybe we should list what we expect from them.

My take (very macOSsy and iOSsy):

  • TimeMachine over SMB
  • TimeMachine size limit per user
  • proper / native integration with Finder (lots of features are not supported, e.g. Versions)
  • proper SMB Shares (SMBv3)
  • FileProvider API: https://developer.apple.com/documentation/fileprovider
  • a proper replacement for iCloud photos (moments, intelligent sorting, editing, face recognition, etc.) somewhat similar to Synology’s
  • native file browsing / quicklook on iOS
  • My Cloud Home backup on external drive
  • online backup
  • 2FA login
  • offline access

Well maybe we are out of luck, there many more questions asked if you select another NAS device than the My Cloud Home option…

@WD_Admin @WDStaff Could you please clarify whether the beta test includes the MCH?

If its in the form I would say it should apply to MCH.

Anyway if WD could confirm it would be nice.

You get many more questions when not selecting MCH… what do you think?

Actually I’ve registered but I dind’t look at the other product options.
Maybe MCH got less questions due to the lack of functions that actually it has comparing to the other ones.

But if it’s in the list, I believe the update should apply to it as well.

There is also the option of « not owning a NAS product »…

Any news about this subject?

I just notice that the original topic is not listed anymore… @WD_Admin what’s the point of this? Create a topic, ask for testers and then what?

@AustinForest This 2020 My Cloud NAS software beta program does not include My Cloud Home and My Cloud Home Duo products.
