WD2GO access from work

I’ve set up WD2GO on my external drive at home & it’s working fine. I’ve tested the web access using my laptop (32 bit XP pro) no problems. When I try to use web access from work (also 32-bit XP pro but on a MS Small Business Server 2008 network) it says “The use of SSL or non-standard http ports is not allowed on Windows XP”. Is it something to do with the firewall here at work? I’m thinkink I might have to open the port explicitly. Any ideas?

No - This is a Windows XP issue.

Odd that it works on my laptop which is also running XP.

It will work, the problem is that it is unsecure. If you look at the web address it will be http://wd2go.com instead of https://wd2go.com.

I am having the same problem with my web access. when you type the web address http://www.wd2go.com it automatically changes the page to secure https://www.wd2go.com You don’t have the option of changing it! You are then allowed to get to the page with the MyBookLive access “button”, but once you “click” that to continue on it takes you to a page that states “There is a problem with this website’s security certificate” (FYI you get the same errors on a Windows7 machine, but you are allowed to view the shares). Once you select "Continue to this website (not recommended) you get the “Shares (1)” page and an error in a seperate popup box stating “The use of SSL or Non-standard http port is not supported on Windows XP”.  So once again we have no option of selecting “http” or “https” and there is no where to proceed after the last error. This is also happening on a friends machine, so I know this isn’t an isolated incident.  Any help would be appreciated.

Certificate Error:

SSL Error

These are not really errors per se. The certifcate we use is not trusted initially by the browser. All you have to do is accept it. It is unfortunate that the browser makes it look like a serious bug, but trust me it is not.

The Windows XP dialog box is an issue with Windows Xp. Our technology uses WebDAV. A very standard way of connecting to computers/servers over the internet. Windows XP does not have support built in to allow secure transmission over https, so we warn the user that it is unsecure. If you upgrade to Vista/Windows 7,  or use a MAC, you won’t see this issue.

If I continue to hit “ok” and try to click “Open in Explorer” the same dialog pops up…continuous loop. The certificate is installed…I assume…see images below. I do not know what I need to do to get any further.

Hello WDTony,

I have same problem as above described - operating system WinXP SP2.

You said: Windows XP does not have support built in to allow secure transmission over https, so we warn the user that it is unsecure.

Althoug I accept certificate, I become same error “The use of SSL or non-standard http ports is not allowed on Windows XP”

Please help, what can I do. I won’t upgrade now to Vista/Window7.

Thanks

Tony,

You said you needed some step-by-step screenshots, hope this helps.

  1. Type in address as www.wd2go.com it automatically puts the “https” in front of the address…

  2. Enter Login Information

3.  Logged In and and now proceed to “select” the MyBookLive Icon

after selecting the MyBookLive Icon… Warning displayed to the certificate “quality”

  1. I select the “Continue to this website” (not recommended)" option

and it proceeds to this screen…

5.  The dialog box that won’t stay away

I select  “OK” and the dialog temporarily   goes away to reveal the option to select “Open in Explorer”…

Once I select the “Open in Explorer” button, this happens… again, again, and again…continuous loop of  “OK” and “open in Explorer”

Once I finally give up and try to close “Internet Explorer” I get this message…

I have tried multiple machines with the same setup… WindowsXP and IE8 with the  identical results.

I have also tried these browsers, Safari, Chrome, and Firefox, again with the same results

It looks like this has something to do with your router configuration.

What router make and model do you have?

Have you forwarded ports on this router?

Do you have uPnP enabled on the router (if so, try turning it off and see if it goes into relayed mode).

Some other information we need:

  1. Go to the applet page
  2.  right click on the applet page and do a “View Source”
  3. Send us the segment  below

Tony

Router: Cisco E2000,

No forwarded ports,

uPnP was enabled; disabled and no change.

Hallo Tony,

I have no router at home (direct connection, only one computer). Same situation as MrMike described (thank you MrMike for detailed step-by-step screenshots) - I become error messge “The use of SSL or non-standard http ports is not allowed on Windows XP”

Thank you for your help

I’m having this same problem with XP machines. “The use of SSL or Non-standard http port is not supported on Windows XP.” It just loops. can’t get past it.

Does anybody have a solution other than the brilliant suggestion to just upgrad to Windows 7? More people have Windows XP than Window 7.  It is incredible to me that WD will just blame this on the operating system. Fix it so it will work.  I need to be able to share files with people that have any type of comptuer setup. Having Web Access should have nothing to to with the operating system. It is through the web not an operating system. I don’t see anything on the box that says it is for Windows 7 only. It says: “Compatibility: Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7, Mac OS Leopard or snow leopard.” It even has Window XP listed FIRST.

Come on.

I put this review on Amazon so as to warn potential buyers  that this device does not work as expected.

The technology we use (called WebDAV) is not supported all that well in Windows XP. In order for you to use Windows XP you need to make sure that the expernal port 80 on your router is mapped to port 80 on the My Book Live. This is not a limitation of our device, just Windows XP. We never have said that you must upgrade to use our device.

A couple things you might be able to do are:

  1. Disable upnp on your router. This will force relay mode and should work.

  2. Go to your router configuration and manually map port 80 to your My Book Live.

Oh yes your WDTONY  did say that there would be no problems if a person would upgrade to Windows 7 earlier in this very thread:

The Windows XP dialog box is an issue with Windows Xp. Our technology uses WebDAV. A very standard way of connecting to computers/servers over the internet. If you upgrade to Vista/Windows 7,  or use a MAC, you won’t see this issue.

==============================

So, I guess I have to log in to each person’s router that wants to download or upload to my “LiveBook” and adjust their router settings? Well, that is a great solution and I’m sure it will save you a lot of time trying to fix this thing so that IT ACTUALLY WILL WORK. for everyone that wants to share files.  You guys have a serious programing flaw here and you just don’t want to deal with it.  How often have I herad that argument: “It’s somebody else’s fault”. You are selling a broken piece of machinery here and then pretenting that it is the consumer’s fault when it doesn’t work…

Out of five Windows XP machines, I only could get 2 to actually connect and work as expected. That was after updating Java and Flash on each machine. It has to work. Period. No excuses. I can deal with updating flash or java but telling me that I have to change router settings is pure ■■■■. Change your settings to work wth all routers.

I think you are not understanding some of what I have said. I never said that you had to upgrade. I did say that Windows Xp - which is a 10 year old operating system has issues with WebDAV. All newer OS’s work fine with communicating over a secured protocal like SSL. As an FYI, all our work machines here still run Windows XP, so it does indeed work with Windows XP.

What I meant by the router settings is only YOUR router settings that the My Book Live is connected to… not everyone that you want to give acces to.

Lets focus on your issue at hand instead of yelling at us. I want to make sure that we get you setup so you can get it to work. First off, can you tell me if it is true that you cannot get past the dialog box that happens when you press the “open in explorer” button? Does it ony pop up once per session, or continually pops up even if you press ok? If that is the case, then that indeed is a bug that we need to fix. Unfortunately we have never seen this here in our testing. I have reported this into our development group to see if they can reproduce, but may need some more details later to help determine why this is happening.

Again, I apologize that you are having these issues and want to make sure we can get this working for you.

66% Of All Windows Users Still Use Windows XP.

It is a loop. It pops up and then when I click on it it goes back to the regular buttons again. Then I push a button and I get the popup again. Can’t get past the popup.  I will try the router settings on my router and see if that will fix it.

Sorry to be so upset but I have put in a LOT of hours on this and have gotten no help that resulted in any change. All I get is people telling me, here and on the phone, that it should only pop up once and then go away. Not happening that way. If I can get it to screw up like this on 3 out of 5 machines, I think it is a commoon problem. Maybe most people will just give up return the thing but I want it to work.

I don’t want to add any fuel to the fire, here, but I use wd2go with my xp machine and I don’t have any issues with the popup.  so, I would assume that there may be an issue with you setup.  I’d let wdtony help you.
