Unexpected error during mybook firmware upgrade

I’ve been trying to update the firmware as per theinstructions on WD download site.  AVG antivirus is disabled,  ZoneAlarm firewall is disabled.  PC is running XP with all windows updates installed and latest USB drivers for intel integrated 82801EB USB .    Downloaded package unzips and expands fine.  BUT  whenI try to run the firmware installer,  windows begins to run the installer,  then crashes within about 3 secs   with typical unhelpful error message   that simply says “unexpected error”.  I’ve also tried running in safe mode,  no difference,  with and without WD smartware running, no difference.    Currently running WD mybook firmware version 1.2.0.20

Any suggestions on other possible causes for this “unexpected error”  please?

I would recommend you to backup the files in My Book and try to update the Firmware from a different computer, I had the same issue and it was due to conflicts with my operating system setup.

Thanks very much.  This worked a treat.  I updated the firmware on a PC running Win7.  No probs at all.
