Smartware 1.3.0.16 crashes!

After installing my brand new MyBook Elite 2 GB drive on my XP Professional SP3 machine (all windows software fully updated and I have all the .NET versions installed through 3.5 SP1) I dutifully updated Smartware to 1.3.0.16 - UH OH!!

The new version “crashes” almost immediately - I get a message telling me that WD File Manager must close due to an error.  When tracking this down through my Control Panel Event Viewer I find that there apparently is a problem with something in the NET framework - the log in the event viewer says :

“Faulting application WDFME.exe, version 1.3.0.16, faulting module mscorwks.dll, version 2.0.50727.3603, fault address 0x0025a6be.”

While Smartware is still running, I have no ability to change the Software Settings - even the default “Set file history 5 files” is changed to “1” and nothing I do can change that.

I would like to use Smartware - I did, after all, pay for it - but it just isn’t working.

I’ve passed your info along.

I now find that even the earlier version (1.2.0.8) ends up with the same (similar?) issue of the WD Filemanager failing to stay running.  I had completely uninstalled the updated version, including cleaning out my registry, turned off the drive and unplugged the USB cable, rebooted my computer and reinstalled the 1.2.0.8 version.  The same issue - WD Filemanager closes unexpectedly with the same Application error found in my Control Panel Events Viewer.

Sure would be nice if WD would let us (the purchasers) delete the Virtual CD partition and refund the value of the Smartware (which, apparently isn’t “smart” enough to run under Windows XP)

Can you run SmartWare if you uninstall the existing version and install 1.3.0.16 directly from the updater?  Make sure you don’t have your drive connected to the computer since we just want SmartWare to install/run.

As I understand your message Jeremy, you want me to 1) uninstall the Smartware version that is installed and then 2) disconnect the drive and then 3) install the updated 1.3.0.16 version directly from the zip file.  If that’s correct and Smartware runs, what’s next?

What has happened is that the 1.3.0.16 does begin running, even categorizing my drives.  But it has never categorized anything on the WD drive (I have manually placed some files there).  After a while (time varies), the error message appears telling me that the WD filemanager needs to close.  I have noticed that the WD Status is still running, but I see no status in my QuickLaunch toolbar - just the icon.

Hi.

Sorry, my English is not good.

I have the same probleam.

I have Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bits, and Smartware 1.3.016 Crash and I had to reinstall 1.2.1.26 version.

Firmware Updater v2.003 (1.0.8.0) update works properly.

Windows 7 has Net Framework 3.5 installed by defect, I disabled antivirus, antispyware… I followed all installation instructions and it doesn’t work.

I wrote an email to WD support and said to follow installation instructions, and there’s no more ideas for the moment.

When I install 1.3.0.16 seems that WD Smartware doesn’t exist.

Then you have to install firmware and Smartware again.

I tried to install this version from the start, but it crashes too.

It lasted 2 hours, 11 minutes and 15 seconds – that is, the 1.3.0.16 version installed without the WD Elite drive attached or turned  on.  The process I followed was:

  1. Uninstall Smartware

2)  Turn off computer

3) Unplug the USB connection and the power connection from the WD Elite drive

  1. Turn on computer

  2. Install 1.3.0.16 from the updater file

Nothing else was changed or added in the just over 2 hours it took for the same WDFME.exe failure.

How about you guys give me the new 3.0 USB version of the new 2TB drive and make sure that SmartWare doesn’t get installed?

I have the same issue as described in these posts.

Perhaps this Event Log related to an exception will help.

Same problem. Xp sp3 latest NET updates. Antivirus etc disabled. Smartware 1.3.0.16 installation runs its course but when it says its completed it deletes the western digital folder and all traces of smartware

JohnEWatson: Yes, update SmartWare without the drive connected.  Do you continue to have errors if you use Windows to error check and defragment the drive?

mikytamar: Does your Windows 7 installation show that you have all components of the Microsoft .NET framework installed within the Windows Features?

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Turn-Windows-features-on-or-off

Antic: Can you use Windows to check your internal and external drive for errors and defrag both?  Does SmartWare run normally thereafter?

After updating with the drive disconnected (I had first uninstalled Smartware and rebooted without the drive connected), the SmartWare 1.3.0.16 still failed after 2 hours.

The drive shows no errors and does not need defrag.

Hi Jeremy!

I have done as you suggested. Windows error check, and defragmented all drives. Both with windows defrag tools and i also tried with a third party program (diskkeeper) and neither method produces any result.

The original version of WD smartware that is embedded on the drive works albeit with enormous performance impacts. Its when i try to upgrade, or install clenaly from the update file, to the 1.3.0.16 version that it fails. After the installer has done its work it has totaly deleted the older smartware and the western digital folder including the new installation.

Wich means i need to reinstall the original old Smartware from the drive to even get the drive to run again.

I have the same issue on Win7 32bit

Even setup says it is completed application is gone.

Clean install and upgrade the same result

Same issue here on Vista 32bit. After installation it is gone. Have installed it without any USB devices connected.

Whats the advice/bugfix?

Its IMPOSSIBLE to update too this new version.

Follow ALL THE STEPS and anyone works.

Full FAIL WD.

Same to me !!!

IT’s imposible to instal it. Returned to the old version.

Thank you for your answers, WDJeremy.

Yes, in my system Microsoft.NET framework 3.5.1 seems to be installed, but there are two lines unmarked:

-Microsoft.NET Framework 3.5.1---------------------------------------------------------(This line is marked)

-Windows Communication Foundation HTTP Activation------------------------(This line is unmarked)

-Windows Communication Foundation HTTP non-HTTP Activation----------(This line is unmarded)

Sould I mark the two lines (HTTP Activation and non-HTTP Activation??

Thaks

Back to 1.2.1.26 versions !!!

This one works …

I have never had a problem with updating Smartware, came to this forum looking for a solution to turn off the Smartware Welcome Screen pops up at Computer Startup… couldn’t find it…emailed to WD support went unanswered…!

I uninstalled Smartware, deleted/formatted the Passport SE750GB, Defragged main drive, installed the  Microsoft.NET framework4 (newest?) then

reinstalled Smartware 1.3…Everything went smoothly (took less than 3min.) and NO more welcome screen popup for now

Check the Syst Utility Config…only see WDDMStatus.exe at Startup but WDFME.exe in Task manager. I do not use Smartware for backingup…just for password security

No computer Slow down experienced with my 3 year old Dell computer XP3, just want to post my own experience hope

that it may help someone?
