New Firmware Release - Version 2.03.24 for the WD TV Live Hub (12/30/10)

Yeah, you don’t want to copy the firmware to the internal HDD.

You can try to do the “Cold boot” flash without the thumbdrive if you copied the firmware files to the root of the HDD.  You might get lucky & it might update that way.

great…it did not feel like the right thing to do but one of the instructions I was operating off of (I believe the online pdf manual) it talked about copying the files to the drive.

when I do not have a flash drive plugged in it hangs on the WD TV Live Hub splash screen with a flash drive plugged in with the firmware it hangs on the updating firmware progress progress bar at 0%.

great day:cry:

Ok I have tried everything.  Sure wish there was a way to just format and start over without shipping the unit back to WD.  Everything worked prior to the firmware upgrade when I had it connected to my 2nd monitor in my computer room.  Wish I would have just left well enough alone and just plugged my unit into my entertainment center upstairs and used it.

I bought directly from WD so do not have the option of driving to Best Buy and exchanging.

Yep, sounds like it may be RMA time.

That’s why I like to by my stuff locally, $199 at WD is the same a $199 at BB, but that 3 weeks to 6 months return time for WD versus a couple hours drive to BB sure makes a difference.

Best Buy did not have stock when I ordered mine and I have had bad experiences with them in the past and thus did not want purchase from them again.

Seriously 3 weeks to 6 months for a replacement…arrrgggghhhh.  Maybe I should have just bought the apple TV or Boxee unit?

Yeah, a lot of people have had bad experiences with BB, but really if you look at it, a lot of people have had bad experiences with just about every company there is.  It’s just one of those cases of, you’re a dam if you do you’re a dam if you don’t, things, if you know what I mean.   Just do what I do when your in that situation, raise cain, call their customer service & tell them that you are going to report them to the BBB & then if they still don’t resolve the issue, go on the BBB website & report your bad experience. But that’s just me.  And you could have ordered online, then returned it to the store it you had to, I know that they still had them in stock up to Chirstmas.

Anyway, I don’t really know just how long it will take to get one RMA’d (the 6 months was probably an exaduration), but I would say that it would take at least a week, maybe 6 at the most.   It really depends though, I think someone a few days ago posted that they had called WD about a replacement & WD said that they were out of stock.  ???

As for getting the Apple TV, I wouldn’t just because you are limited to 720P.   I did think about getting the Boxee, but then they went & changed the UI right after the first boxes were shipped & there has been a lot of people that have been unhappy with it.  I can tell you that from owning a Seagate Freeagent Theater + for over a year, and then researching a lot before getting the HUB, that no matter what you get there maybe some problems with it, it just seems to be the nature of the beast.

Just go buy a new one from Best Buy and (swap it) and  return the broken one back to Best Buy. A win win situation. No waiting for WD to repair your old one.

Maybe WD will actually call me back and give me a solution quickly.  All I know is that I am not going to upgrade to the latest firmware for several months afterwards of it coming out, because they have a problem.

I had two issues with the 02.03.24 firmware:

In the video tab; my video folder was were hidden (i still could find files trough file tab of course)

In windows 7 network; the livehub dissapeared, it only showed the the hub under media devices (couldn’t put new stuff on the hub)

The downgrade solution worked for me:

Got the firmware as posted in this topic http://community.wdc.com/t5/WD-TV-Live-Hub/Downgrade-Firmware/m-p/109414/highlight/true#M3403

Put it on a blank USB drive

Changed the version number in .ver file into 02.03.25 (i guess anything works, as long as its a upper number from the 02.03.24 firmware)

Booted the hub with the usb drive, it asked to sync, i synced it, nothing happened, booted it again, denied the sync message, and after a while, bingo, it found the ‘new’ firmware by itself and asked to upgrade from the usb drive.

My video folder is still hidden in the video tab, but the hub shows again in the network, which is most important to me.

Maybe WD can post an update when a firmware update is expected…

Or get from WD and don’t bother with the editing of the ver file.

Anybody fix the problem with metadata not showing in the movies folder?

I’m having the same problem since upgrading. In gallery mode, metadata shows fine in each movie’s specific folder, but in the in the general Movies  folder where all of the movie folders are stored, the metadata shows up blank when scrolling through the folders. I didn’t have this problem before upgrading.

I cleared the media library and it’s recompling. Perhaps that will fix it

It’s also not a good idea to fault another man for getting back what he feels he’s owed, especially if he has been inconvenienced after spending $200 and is receiving little or no feedback…  B4 you go all Jimminy Cricket on another man, consider the circumstances and if you disagree, keep your comments to urself…

After upgrade; movie titles are now showing extentions .mkv

Reloading metadata from the web fixes this initially, but once you purge and reload the media library info (which I often do after manually changing the xml files) the titles revert to showing the extention.

Anyone, seen/fixed this?

Now how is that fraud? Please explain! It is perfectly legal!

Fraud:

Something intended to deceive; deliberate trickery intended to gain an advantage

You would be telling Best Buy that the Hub they sold is faulty when it was not. You are deceiving them to gain the advantage of not waiting for an RMA or a new one from the original supplier.

After now running this firmware release since the day it was released, it is STILL DRRVING ME INSANE.

a) After most of the original metadata had been destroyed by the firmware update, I spend forever doing “Get Info” to get new metadata. After most is OK gain, I seemed to be “missing” around 200 of 750 movies held by this unit.
So, I do a “Clear Library” and let the unit rescan the three drives, which should help right?
Sure, it now finds the right number of movies, BUT despite the medata showing the right movie Genres, when I attempt to filter by movie Genre, ALL MOVIES ARE SEEN BY THE INTERNAL FILTER as “Unknown”. “Unknown” is the ONLY Genre shown in the filter selections, despite the metadata and the movie information shown oin the screen showing otherwise.

b) WORSE… About half a dozen times I have had to hard reset (yank power) from the unit because it hangs. A problem I never had before this firmware. Most hangs happen right after doing a “Get Info”. It shows the downloaded movie information for my acceptance, I click OK, and then it just SITS THERE showing the information with the big green check-mark button lit up to the right, and NEVER COMES BACK. It is like it just stops looking for the remote signal. No buttons work. Can’t even be turned off using the remote anymore. No remote buttons are working again.

Meanwhile, the unit is actually running, other processes are executing on it, because file transfers that were going on in the background (sending more files to the hub) always continue with no issue at all. So the fileserver part is still going strong.

This has happened over and over again and is a real pain in the a**. First I have to stop the file transfers in an attempt to not corrupt the filesystems when I yank power to reboot it, and then manually go recycle power and wait for a new reboot to complete, which takes FOREVER on this unit.

As a many-year professional OS programmer, I’d say some real amateurs are involved in the development of this firmware. Every new release seem to bring a new kind of destruction of customer effort and data.
Golden rule in this kind of programmming. ALWAYS PRESERVE CUSTOMER DATA AND PREVIOUS CUSTOMER EFFORTS. PEOPLE HATE HAVING TO SPEND HOURS and HOURS STARTING OVER AGAIN, just to get an “upgrade” to some control software (whether called firmware or an Operating System). Especially for a “black-box” item like this little hub.

I bought this unit for it to serve up my movies. Not for me to sit for hour after hour trying to maintain and RE-establish the data on it.

EDIT: An add-on comment to anyone planning to do the “Clear Library” thing: It will also clear your play-queue(s).

As I were loading up about 750 movies on this thing, I had been clicking some movies into the play-queue that I had not seen for years, wanting to remember to see them again. Trying to avoid scanning through the whole list to find them again. That is now wiped out as well…

EDIT 2: I found out what has to be done to “FIX” the “Unknown” Genre shown on all movies, despite the actual metadata being correct already. The “Clear Library” not only made the HUB think that the only movie Genre was “Unknown” but it also wiped out all previously “Get Info” loaded movie titles (loaded using “Get Info” AFTER upgrading to the latest firmware). The “Clear Library” reverted all Titlrs to being shown as the file and/or directory names, while other metadata still shows correctly.

Maually doing “Get Info” for each movie, and reloading the same, already showing on the screen,  medata data over again, restores the movie title AND fixes up the HUBs mysterious internal cache of the movie Genres in use (already showing correctly on the screen). Slowly the selections in the filter by Genre is building itself up again.

But that means I have to do “Get info” on allmost 750 movies for now the umpteenth time.

As I mentioned earlier. Programmers with absolutely no respect for their customer’s time.

No… Best Buy just distributes them for WD… They send them back to WD and get another unit in exchange. Best Buy is out nothing. You are indeed returning the product to WD through Best Buy with Best Buy being the middle man.

So you believe that the time and effort of sending it back costs Best Buy nothing!! There is obviously ‘paperwork’ to complete plus  labour charges for a unit that they did not even sell you.
