has anyone lost files from a usb attached drive? my friend lost a 1040p mkv when the wd choked on playback.

Hi, provably the file got corrupted, you can try to recover the file using recuva or teskdisk on a Windows PC.
plug the drive into a computer. I think it will still show (via the competer) - & it is just the media player hiding the file.
Assuming this is so, via the computer, delet the .wd file from the drive (root). Then plug in to player & should be all good again. This is exactly what happened to me once any way.
