I switched to a windows 8 laptop, and instructions seem to tell me to reformat my passport in order to set it up for back up. This seems to mean erasing all files on my passport. Can this be avoided as I do not have another device to back up to before reformatting.

it is not necessary to format the drive in order to use it on Windows 8. Is the computer asking you to format the drive?
If it was formatted on a Mac it woun;t be able to be used on Windows. If used on an earlier version of Windows it should work. does the drive show in Disk Management or Device Manager?
