Is there no way around the videos that are protected content then?

Depends on to which content you refer.

If you’re asking about YouTube, then no.  Anything that has been marked by the uploader as not being viewable on a set-top box, is blocked at YouTube’s end.  All you can do is try to push it to the WDTV from the PC, where it is viewable.
