Almost all of my music files are in WMA Lossless, but my WD Media Player isn’t playing them.

Do I need a firmware update?

If the player will never play them, which lossless format will it play - I’ll convert to that.

It appears that WMA Lossless is not supported however FLAC is.

Correct, you simply need to ditch crappy M$ formats.
