I have now patiently been waiting for a VERY long time for improvements on the firmware, but so far none of the things I had expected to be implemeted have been implemented.
Especially the possibility to see the most used format for saving home videos, the DV format is still not supported!
I have 500 Gb of video that I still cannot see, actually the reason why I bought the WDTV live.
And still no support for net radio in Europe! Looks like this model never was ment for the European market!
PLEASE let me know if DV format will ever be supported.
If not I better start looking for other products than WD. Definately the last time I buy WD products if standard formats cannot be supported and promises are not kept!
For my 1 year old cheap DVB-T receiver “Denver” which is “Made in china” I just got new firmware which made it possible to time shift and record TV programs. And here I did not even expect any new functions because of the cheap price!
But WD cannot make a firmware working in the same period, which is something to think about!
A very disappointed WD customer
(Also having several problems with WD USB harddisks, although covered on warranty)
PLEASE let me know if DV format will ever be supported.
I’m going to guess that since the chip the WDTV Live is based around doesn’t list itself as supporting DV, that it would be fairly safe to say you’re never going to see DV support added… the chip can only do what the chip was built to do.
But it does beg the question… since the WDTV Live was never listed as playing DV, it seems a rather poor choice as a player for DV. You say you bought a non-DV device specifically for playing DV?
What I saw was that it supported AVI format. From WD homepage:
“Play a wide variety of file formats - WD TV Live supports a wide variety of the most popular file formats. No need to spend time transcoding.”
And I see DV-AVI as a very popular format! Every one who has a DV or Digital 8 video camera of course save video in this format to keep the best quality.
Looking back now, I should of course have asked WD specific if they support the DV-AVI format.
But after reading your answer, I probably have to look around for a new player. Sad because I liked this, also because it plays my full HD videos from my new camera fine. But I don’t want to have several players filling up below my TV.

Will there ever be a new official version for the WDTV Live?
I think they release betas to solve the bugs out. The final version (aka stable) will probably be the last version for WD TV Live. They have the new device (Hub) coming out soon.
