Will it work on Mac AND PC?

I’ve got three computers. My old PC laptop, which has all my files (about 8000 songs and countless other movies and other files) on it, but it’s had it’s day and is slow and buggy, a Macbook, which is now what I use as my normal laptop and a PC desktop. I need a hard drive (preferably portable) that will run on Mac AND PC, so I can transfer all the files from my old PC and use them on my Macbook and desktop PC. The files will stay on the hard drive and only be read of it, but I need to be able to move files across, edit them and put more on. I’m interested in the My Passport Essential SE ( http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=430)) and I’ve seen there are both PC and Mac versions, but will it work on both?

I would suggest you get a elements

Since those smartware drives are not recomended to be formatted as fat32

The FAT32 has a max file size of 4 gig. I would also go with a powered drive. There is a utility from Apple that will use the NTFS fromat Windows uses it’s NTFS-3G see post 6 http://community.wdc.com/t5/External-Drives-for-Mac/WD-My-Book-Elite-Using-on-a-Mac-amp-PC/m-p/92308#M1894
