Whirring sound

Hi, I have a WD 250GB MyBook, model number WD25001032, so it’s quite old. For the past year it’s been giving me problems, usually my PC not recognizing it, but then doing so after a reboot. Now recently it takes a really long time for me to be able to access the drive (I open a folder, and I get a spinning circle for what seems like forever).

Right now, neither my PC nor my laptop recognizes it. It won’t power down. When I unplug the power source and then plug it back in, it’s automatically on, but it won’t be recognized by my computers. And there’s a rhythmic whirring sound – like a whirr per second, and it doesn’t stop.

Has anyone had this problem? I would be most grateful for a solution!

Make sure to backup all data and test the drive.

The sound could be a warning that the drive is about to fail.
