Which cable/adapter to use for a My Book when having broken the case open?

Hi

I have an old external hard drive I would like to access as it contains a lot of old pictures etc. However, I’m missing both the power adapter and the USB-cabel. Also, I recall that the reason I stopped using it was that it wouldn’t spin up and/or wouldn’t be detected by any PC.

So, I figure the best way is to buy some sort of IDE/SATA to USB-adapter with its own power supply which I can use on the hard drive after I have broken the case open so I can connect to it directly (to eliminate problems with the power supply/power plug/USB input etc). What I’m not sure about, however, is which cables/adapter to buy to be sure it fits. I’m not even sure if my hard drive has IDE or SATA and how much power it would be needing. Maybe there’s some universal adapter that could fit?

The model number is: WD5000D032-000

It’s called: My Book Premium Edition

Could anyone point me in the right direction for which cable/adapter I should buy?

I really appreciate all help, thank you.

Hello,

First you need to confirm the connection on the unit and then you should be able to find online an adapter that you can use with the unit.

Since this is not a supported configuration, I won’t be able to provide all the information that you need. Perhaps some of the users on the community can provide you more information about this.

Thank you for your reply.

By “confirm the connection”, you mean that I have to confirm whether my disk is IDE or SATA?

And if I find that it’s IDE, I should be able to buy an IDE->USB-adapter with it’s own power supply that would fit? Are all these adapters the same, or do they differ in their voltage?
