What do you mean by the term "cloud"?

a cloud is not only a remote hard driver you can access anywhere. these days, all cloud service in the market offer sync function. remote access plus sync, that’s the cloud.

thus I would say WD is somewhat misleading in terms of my cloud. it does not come with a sync function. It is only a somewhat advanced remote hard driver. yes, installation of bt sync can make it happen. but then firmware 4.0 kill it. for me, the new firmware does improve performance a lot. previously, it is very slow to access the driver (even before I install bt sync, do not blame bt sync for it). now, it is much faster. Thus, I do not want to downgrade my firmware. However, I would like to see the official sync funcion from WD, or at least let us to DIY it. I am not a linux geek, but am forced into doing SSH.

please remeber, you cannot call you product “cloud” without the sync function.

You bring up a very good point, IMO. I also agree you would expect a much easier way to sync remote files back to this cloud. There is a forum for posting ideas:

And those ideas end up in the garbage.

Actually one of my ideas I posted for the EX2 has been implemented…the other one was rejected. Not all ideas end up in garbage. Posting it there is better than to not posting it there.

Can you provide details or a link to where you come up with your definition of cloud?

Here are a couple I found.

ok. I see your point. these are offical definition (but somewhat old). My cloud is consistent with the definition. However, pratically, all the major cloud providers, targeting individual customers, such as drop box, one driver, sugar sync, etc, all offer sync function. So, pratically, we need sync function for a cloud. And the market already creates the impression that a cloud comes with the sync function. The definition you find needs to be updated–just my opinion, though.

this and so much more, someone finds a word that sounds similar, and they use it for their own purpose, using the marketing gained by the mass popular expectation of what it means.

OK guys, we are a bit off track. To me, this thread is not about the nomenclature of cloud, or WD marketing, or whether WD can or cannot take all ideas and put them in their product.

I still think that the absence of easy sync between a computer and the WD MyCloud NAS is an issue. Windows Offline Folders is a weak alternative to this and it works only on Windows “pro” versions out of the box (although it seems you can hack that restriction).

I want to have the speed of local file access when opening a big file (like quickbooks or quicken, a video files), but I also want to make sure there is a central “hub” copy up to date automatically upon change. I also would like easy to retain version (Windos offline folders don’t do that), and identify/resolve file version conlicts, because this will happen (Windows offline folders do this actually well). I ended up using a third party sync, but it doesn’t work for remote access…

These all sound like good ideas and there are several places to post ideas. Use this link.
