Weird UPS behavior connected to EX2

i recently had a power outage, while my equip and the EX2 were plugged into the battery side of an APC BE550G unit.

typically i have some time to shutdown my stuff and the NAS and do so manually most of the time because i did not use the USB connection between the backup and the NAS.

this time, i had the usb cable connected to the EX2, when the power went out, it triggered an immediate shutdown of the NAS (no way to select time interval in the EX2 dashboard). i was relying on the UPS to send battery power state to the NAS and then the shutdown would happen when battery reaches 10%, but that is not what happened.

unexpected outcome with the usb cable connected. interesting to note that with no usb connection between any of my hardware and the UPS, they can run for 20 mins at least, but are blind to the state of power of the battery.

i am wondering if this is an issue with firmware of the EX2 or a problem with the APC unit sending triggers ?

one thing that could be a problem is if the UPS is designed to kill battery power after the runtime preset. i was not aware of it doing something like that, and if it does, then i suppose i would not use it with the NAS connection because i also need to power other network devices as long as the battery has any power (keep network devices online until mains are restored)…

i might not be understanding how a UPS is supposed to work … but i know i have 30 mins of battery reserve with my devices connected if I do not use any USB connections to it and it gives me enough time to manually power down the NAS.

i’m surprised there is no option in the dashboard of the EX2 to setup controlled shutdown after some time lapse after a trigger.

answering my own question here, hope this helps others as well.

the UPS is designed to function in a manner where the setting chosen in the UPS’s app or on the unit for runtime defines the trigger/command it sends to the device connected via USB, but the setting also kills the UPS’s battery power output. guessing this is to conserve battery power and assuming whatever’s connected no longer needs to be powered.

in my case, where i have other network devices connected to battery, it’s important to keep them on/working while the nas receives a trigger to shutdown from the UPS.

i was speaking with Cyberpower tech support and they advised that their Powerpanel Business app is able to allow me to keep UPS battery power alive while sending a shutdown command via USB (to the NAS). i decided to buy a Cyberpower CP600LCD and use that for my network appliances.

i also tried reaching out to APC about the issue I have and did not get a response, i would not rely on it to power my network equipment if i cannot do something similar to what can be done on a Cyberpower UPS.
