WDTV not playing video just sound from an AVI recorded on a Chilli Technology Action 3 HD 720P Cam

Hi,

Not sure if I’ve got the right sub-forum, but here goes.

Any footage recorded on my Chilli Technology Action 3 HD 720P Head Cam will not play back correctly on the WDTV device. I can hear sound but no video.

I’m happy to provide example AVI’s if that would help with any investigation.

I hope it can be fixed.

Thanks

Please post the full TEXT output of MEDIAINFO for such a file.

As far as I know, Motion JPEG isn’t a supported video codec.

Same answer… Unsupported video codec.

Thanks for the answer as to why the video will not play.

The million dollar question(s) are “Will WD ever support this codec, and how do I request them to consider supporting it”?

Do WD monitor these forums to consider enhancements to address issues reported by the general public?

Thanks

The likelihood of adding support for this is next to nil for two reasons:

1- Most video codec support is implemented in hardware, not firmware.

2- This product, by all accounts is almost dead.   WD is no longer developing features for it.

i guess that’s one advantage other platforms have over ‘media players’ video/audio codecs can be added via

firmware updates or software)

(Raspberry Pi added experimental VP6, VP8, MJPEG, and Ogg Theora)

(HTPC via Software)

Yes, the XBMC software does do decoding on many codecs, but that also severely limits performance, hence why only SD is supported on a lot of the codecs.

SD support only ? … give it time, processors are always getter faster

Well of course the are. And so are the hardware decoders. So in the same parallel vein, by the time the Pi-equivalent does software HD decoding, the hardware-based decoders will be doing Hi10p and 2K4K HD.

In other words, software decoders by rule will always lag well behind hardware decoders.

But as Tony said this won’t be of much use if they don’t have the power to play back those codecs properly. From all I’ve read DTS is a no go and that’s why I won’t try the Raspi even if I’m craving XBMC.

Just tried a 720pHD VP6 FLV Short Clip and the RPi plays it fine.
