WDTV Live with latest firmware losses ability to play DVD .isos

With Firmware 1.04.31_V I observe two problems.  One is reconnection to network often fails, or connects and then claims that there is no media in folder.  At one point I believe it was also changing permissions in the top level directory of the Samba share that holds my media.  The top directory would be marked as a d--------- only.  I fixed that by changing the owner of the directory from the share login id  to linux root.  That stopped it.  Anyway, I need to reconnect after power cycle to handle the next problem below.  I’ll try a static IP to see if that improves the situation, but all reasonably competent network devices work fine with DHCP addresses.

The really awful problem that makes the box unusable is that when the network share functions, sometimes trying to play a DVD.iso returns message of cannot play the file format, consult user manual.  Well, it sometimes does that right after playing the very same DVD.iso.  Off/On from power button does not fix the problem.  I usually have to power cycle it twice by removing the power cord.  However, last night even that did not fix the problem.

There are some other reports of this same problem in the firmware thread, but they are buried, so I thought I should start this thread.

Thanks.

Have you tried the latest Official Firmware Release (Version 1.05.04_V)?

Regards,

No problem to play iso from network with both 1.04.31 and 1.05.04. For sure network capability and performance have to be improved.

Glad it works for you.  It is, however, definitely broken in the manner which I described.  Intermitent problems don’t happen for everyone or all the time.  Sometimes it worked fine.  And then it stopped working.  I have witnesses!

Time will tell 8-).  I just changed the firmware this weekend after yet another instance of the previous version losing its mind.  So far, it works.

Thanks.

I lost ISO playback capability with the upgrade to 1.05.04.  Going back to my previous version.

What a turd!

Did you try reseting the device?

ISO plays fine for me under all firmwares, including 1.05.04.

Reset it several times and it didn’t help.

Unfortunately, I upgraded one of mine without consulting these forums.  I’ll never do that again. Glad I left my other two alone.

Well, I must agree with the others.  This firmware is a total POC.  There is absolutely no improvement in the major problems playing ISO images, either DVD or Blu-ray.  Fast forward, and then it won’t play at all, or loses sound or locks up completely.  Sometimes a power cycle gets things working agin, but not for long.  FF is the kiss of death.

Basically, this device is useless for it purpose as a media player.  Way to go WD.

I certainly can’t replicate this behaviour, either local storage or Network Share.

If I play any of my .iso’s, nothing “breaks” if I fast-forward them… playback just resumes normally with full audio when I hit “Play”.

If there’s “no improvement”, I take it .iso files won’t play properly for you under any firmware?  Perhaps it’s your files or your networking and not the player?

Iso files play sometimes.  Take tonight, for example.

Came home, was gonna’ watch blu-ray iso rip of Altitude.  Set the mighty POC player to play - it starts up fine, but no audio.  I play with the option menu, and find I have only two audio tracks to chose from, and there is no disc menu.  The audio choices are TrudHD, which produces no sound to my older receiver, and Dolby Digital Stereo, which turns out to be the comentary track.  Not what I had in mind.  Never mind that the second audio track is the normal AC3, which would play fine on the system if the WDTV-dead actually gave me that choice.

Well, I start and stop, do the reset to system defaults and add back the necessary network access stuff.  Back to play the movie.  Same thing, two audio choices, neither of which is useful… Start stop again - now it cannot play the file format,  Consult owner’s manual …

HuckpTHewie.  As far as I know this started with the last couple of firmware updates, but before that there was no DVD navigation, so iso didn’t work at all.  I was happy to get the iso play capability, since it saves a transcoding step.  But I’m not so delighted anymore…

The fact that isos work fine for you tells me mainly that you have a future as a WD QA engineer, and I do not 8-)  It could be the server, but VLC and PowerDVD and Windows Media Player all can play stuff from the server just fine, although I have to mount the isos via VitualCloneDrive, since none of them play isos.  I do lots of other things with the server and have no problems at all.  In fact, it is the most stable bit of hardware and software I have, presumably because it’s not from either of the evil software empires.

Just a thought, what software are you using to rip with?  And, have you tried using another software to rip an iso?  Sorry, if you’ve already brought that up before.
