WDTV Live - random avi files being converted to folders

@cocovanna: When using 1.05.04, doesn it on every startup prompt you to do firmware update? Or is there a way to turn this off?

http://community.wd.com/t5/WD-TV-Live-Live-Plus/Can-I-Turn-Off-the-quot-New-Firmware-Found-quot-Notification/m-p/28198#M8383

or if your router doesn’t allow blocking specific sites, you can set your gateway address in the WD setup screen to 127.0.0.1 - but if you do that it won’t be able to access the internet at all…just your local network.

My router can’t block specific sites. The other option, to block whole internet, is a big constraint to WDTVLIve functionality, cause it blocks looking youtube, listening webradio etc.

Isn’t it possible to make the box “think” it has the newest firmware inside ? By tweaking the version info inside the old firmware file before using it for update, or log in to the Linux inside WDTV and tweaking the file that stores the current firmware version?

I can’t understand why WD does not implement it same way like dozens of other software update mechanisms do: They ask one time "There’s a new update VX.Y.Z, what do you want  to do? " plus a manual update item in the system menu…

->no, I have the file corruption even with a 465GB drive.

(Doesn’t this forum support to put a reply directly *under* the question? Does it always put my text at the end of the thread???)

OK. I expected that my anwser would appear directly under the question, in th eplace where it first was questionned, maybe indented one tab. So everyone could immediately see there’s an answer without reading the whole thread…

@batman, I’ve just entered a wrong gateway at the Live – I’m only using it at my local network (not for youtube etc.), so that works

The same happening here, I cant understand how WD has not solved this problem with a standard sofware update (ah, the evil that men do!)

hi everybody.

i’m having the same of you in this thread. i found a trusted italian website from where you can download previouses firmwares.

can i link it here?

Trusted by whom?

It’s one of the most important italian hardware and software portals and fori. I found a thread in which they wrote a large article about wdtv live. I can send the link privately if someone wants to test.

You can use these MD5s to verify authenticity:

Let’s have the link already.

http://www.hwupgrade.it/forum/showthread.php?t=2065989

here is the link to the thread. if you look at Firmware Ufficiali Western Digital [official Western Digital Firmwares] you can find that the links that ends with Server WD point to the Western Digital Server.

Beware, that utility was added to the thread by a person who never took part in any of the conversation and it was his only post.

Have a WD Live, Live Plus, and SMP.  Only the Live has shown the corruption so far.  Plugged in a 4TB drive to backup my main media server and started noticing corruption right away.  Disabled media library and it calmed down quite a bit but still corrupting files.  I run a sync to correct files (delete empty folders which are usually renamed m3u files and only occasionally an mp3 or avi file) and replace missing files.  I then do another scan and new files are already corrupted.  I’ve watched for several days and the corruption happens even if I’m not writing to the drive.  Really something that should be considered a critical issue by WD and addressed right away.  I’m happy to send in my unit for testing if you want to send a spiffy new SMP to take it’s place.  I’m sure others here would volunteer to do the same.  We love our players so help us out WD!

The MD5 hash info is very useful.  You can actually get the firmware directly from WD.  Select the current firmware download link, paste it in the address bar and substitute the name of the desired firmware file.  Was able to get 1.06.15 directly from WD site.

Thank you to all the contributors that helped sort this out.

I first discovered this problem and read about it here in these forums more than two months ago. TWO MONTHS IS FAR TOO LONG FOR A PROBLEM OF THIS GRAVITY TO BE FIXED BY WESTERN DIGITAL. Come on, WDC!!! Files are being corrupted by your product. I have lost numerous IRREPLACABLE files because of this idiocy. You need to get this problem fixed IMMEDIATELY with a FRESH FIRMWARE UPDATE. This is riduculous. I personally intend to spread the word through the trade press that the Western Digital WDTV Live is CORRUPTING USER FILES. How will that affect the reputation of your product???
