WDTV Live Limited Public Beta 1.03.38_V (8/11/10)

There are problem with firmware that DID NOT exist in earlier firmware (1.02.21). When playing a video file with AAC audio file, the audio starts to stutter if I resume playing after forwarding or rewinding the video. This also happens if you skip 10 minutes ahead/backwards. If you play it from the beginning, then the audio is fine. This problem was not present in earlier firmware, so please fix it! Thanks.

Also now that the player supports dvd menu, which is awesome, there is a tiny problem introduced. The 10 minute ahead/backward skip doesnt work for dvd isos. The only thing that works is chapter skip with the next button. But for dvd iso’s that do not have chapters, then it is impossible to skip fast forward except using the forward/rewind button manually.

Unfortunately, this beta got me more bugs than the official 1.02.21 release…

In the release notes of 1.03.35_V there is an solved issue about mp4 audio:

“Resolved MP4 problems with seeking and audio stopping”

This is an bug on the 1.02.21 release I have with a few mp4 files. After 10 minutes or so, the audio stops and seeking in the movie is almost impossible.

So I downloaded and installed this new beta release because of this fix.

Seeking in these ‘bad’ mp4 files is now possible!

BUT, the audio doesn’t stops after 10 minutes, it doesn’t play at all!!!

And even worse, after trying to play an ‘bad’ mp4 file. The good ones don’t even work no more and I have to restart the WD and also the audio receiver to get sound on a good video file!!! No audio at all!!!

And on top of all that, my audio receiver starts to smell like burned plastic or what the hell that smell is…

_ I’m really dissapointed about this one… _

Don’t you guys test these pre-releases yourself?!

If you need some testcases please pm me.

Are you saying that this firmware is causing your audio receiver to over heat? I notice that you have only posted once. You could start a new post and give details of your bad mp4’s using mediainfo and see if there is any solution to your problem.

…

Seriously??

Update causes my HDMI monitor to show a garbled green image just as in the previous beta. Monitor is Samsung 2494hs.

Thanks.

Had the same issue while testing the component output. Check thru the different color spacing profiles for hdmi.

Have you tried setting the hdmi res & htz manually ?

omg i have update from 1.02.21 to 1.03.38 no hdmi works this joke from wd.

dont have any serious programmer?

I believe the auto detect feature for hdmi may be broken, connect the unit any other way, either component or composite, and manually set the hdmi resolution & hertz. It should work fine after that is set.

According to the powers that be it’s to be expected since it’s only a beta…

From my experience there seem to be two glaring issues since 1.02.xx

  1. HDMI auto detection doesn’t work properly anymore.

  2. The HDMI port isn’t properly released when you power the unit off with the remote.

Can we at least getting some official response that WD are working on it …

People are a lot less upset about things like this if they know a solution is coming.

If you guys release this version as a full version (and supply new units with it)

you are going to get a ton of support calls/returned units.

Not everyone is going to know how to manually set up HDMI or want to play with its settings.

For nearly 50% of my mp3 files the WD TV live does not display the ID3 tags at all. This WD box is the only device and application which seems to have problems with my audio files (Synology fine, WMP fine, even an old Siemens m740av handles these audios without any problem).

Here a mediainfo example of a working mp3 (ID3 tags displayed):

I could not detect a pattern what could cause this defect in the WD box and even the newest  1.03.38_V does not change this behaviour.

Any help welcome, with thx in advance,

JimKnopf (from Germany)

Very pleased with this update. DVD navigation seems to work fine with the iso´s I tested.

I have one problem that keeps bugging me…

I have lots of mp4 files encode with Nero Recode with embedded subtitles.

To my suprise these subtitles are displayed correctly but they stay on screen until the next subtitle is up.

In scenes with no concersations this is annoying because the last displayed subtitle stays on screen.

I have tested this with lost of Nero Recode mp4 files and all share the same problem. The problem is not there on my pc with SMplayer for instance…

Another thing… Everytime I disconnect the external harddrive, the WD player seems to forget the resume point on the harddrive etc… It seems that the player forgets the external harddisk everytime you disconnect. It seems that the player writes info to the disk so why is information lost when you connect/disconnect…

i have tried everything…

i have now installed 1.03.22 and everything seems to be working, no a/v sync problems, hdmi output is working…

The resume point is I believe kept in on-board memory. This is lost when you disconnect the WDTV from power. Newer WDTV units with a deeper standby also lose this info then they go into standby. The info written to disk is for the media library.

The problem is obviously in the way the mp3 tag is written. Use something like mp3tag to rewrite the tag and see if that overcomes your problem. (mp3 tag is even better for you as it originates from Germany)

Updated to this one from 1.02.21 and my LCD TV (Sony KDL-32D3000) said to me “Signal not recognized. Check your device’s output settings”.

I reverted using my memory from the previous update (Enter → Right Arrow → Enter), since I couldn’t get any video signal.

Note : when I reverted to 1.02.21, I did see a visual update progress, which I did not see when I updated to 1.03.38_V.

Why do I have the feeling it won’t work as well when the final firmware is out ? :stuck_out_tongue:

same here downgrade to 1.02.21 and work all 1.03.38 its dont work many tries reset many times.

res & htz manually its impossible go to auto

every new release find two new bugs in fimrware and only small bug fixed many bugs still there

example:

divx out of sunc

wmv if rewind go again back from start sometimes and stop and go back to menu

etc,etc.

im shure in next releases maybe fix the hdmi and dont have sound  and preleases its dont fix anything.

Live365 stupid thing its dont work to many countries i buy media player and cannot play my media files:angry:

Tested v38 over the weekend, and unfortunately the “no audio and slow motion” bug from v35 ist still there (see http://community.wdc.com/t5/Firmware/WD-TV-Live-Firmware-Version-1-03-35-Limited-Public-Beta-7-14-10/m-p/35379#M3670). I can now recreate that with a 1080p MKV file with two DTS tracks:

  • Play the mkv for about 15-20 minutes
  • Turn off player with red button on remote
  • Turn player back on, select same MKV, OK, Resume
  • Movie resumes and plays for about 8-9 minutes then suddenly looses sound and plays at like 3-5fps

The only way to fix this is to unplug power. Watching that movie straight from start to end wotks without problems. This does not happen with latest official firmware (v21).

Hello, please find included my remarks and input for the WD-staff… 1)HDMI → issue: 1.1) Problem most people are talking about is realated to the 8-12bit HDMI Deep Colour (I did put an analyzer on it and saw you guys/girls of WD didn’t respect the standard during the initial handshake) 1.2) I’ve tested it on some Sony’s, Samsungs, Philips and 8 bit did the trick(after reset by paperclip and not seeting it to auto and force it to 8-bit) - so basicaaly, avoid auto and 12-bit 2) DVD Navigation → must have 2.1) why must have (every cheap box has it… I’m using Freecom and others for a long time and they don’t have issues with IFO 2.2) so please add IFO-support to eady enable menu-feauters such as different movies 2.3) Please enable the “menu” in “options” … 2.4) please add ISO support to Media-Resources (DNLA you know) and not only in network-shares Cheers -xtof BTW: I’ve been in R&D for some time so I’m willing to help out and make this the product you wanna have… you guys from WD have everything to make it a success… with little changes BTW2: oh yeah - communicate more what you’re working on and acknowledge…

What the heck are you talking about?

2 This firmware DOES support DVD navigation.

2.1) What?  What does IFO files have to do with anything?

2.2) What?  IFOs are just an information block within a DVD structure.

2.3) MENU IS in Options.

2.4) DVD’s CANNOT be played back on DLNA.   It’s not up to WDTV to Fix ANYTHING, because that’s not broken.   DLNA protocol doesn’t support it.

By the way, a properly formatted posting makes it a whole lot easier to read…
