Wdtv live and new windows 8 pc issues..........help

I recently purchased a new HP desktop with windows 8.  I seem to be having a nightmare to get these two communicating.  With my old PC (Win XP) there was no problem finding the files. Now it seems very inconsistant, files are there…no there…now need to sign in password.  Not sure if I messed up the settings…just learning Win 8.  Is there a step by step process to link files?

Win 8 may be like Win 7, in that in Win 7, you need to go into advanced sharing and turn OFF requiring passwords (don’t use homegroups either) 

If you have made the leap from XP to Win 8 without Win 7 in between, you have your work cut out for you!
