WDTV crashes all the time

I am also using a WDTV Live with a WD Passport external HD, and yes, it keeps crashing and freezing up. This didn’t start happening until recently. I’m wondering if it has anything to do with the last firmware update.  I’m now in the market for a new media player, any suggestions?

Me too. Was working Ok, but flaky before the firmware updates.  I’ve spent hours trying to configuring it and only succeeded in getting a migrane. Back to the retail supplier as far as I’m concerned. Simply not worth it IMHO

I just happened to find a way to crash my WDTV Live: choose the ‘folder.jpg’ when selecting a video to play, and the jpg is larger than 600 Kb or 700px tall.

Other than that this thing is stable using a wired connection. I use it for at least 2 to 4 hrs a day; it gets warm but no problems so far.

Since I haven’t had mostly any issue I ventured to load a mod firmware that changes the interface icons. But afaik, no other changes are implemented there.

I’m not saying it’s the perfect player, and we all can see that the interface could use some work  but for me it’s pretty stable, and mostly trouble free not considering  the well known codecs/audio modes not supported.

Still, Plex in a mac mini is a very tempting option.

I’ve found that a bunch of .wmv files that I used to play WITHOUT ANY ISSUES on the 1st Gen WDTV, now cause the WDTV LIVE to crash with the “Fatal Error” message. I found that the only way to get the WDTV LIVE working again is to reset to factory defaults.

It seems odd that these files would work on the 1st GEN WDTV and not on the WDTV LIVE?

Any thoughts:

(FYI… yes, I’ve checked the files, check HD for errors, tried files on a PC, etc…all the usual stuff, so please don’t suggest them as a solution).

I am going to try and convert the files to MKV’s and see what happens…

Is anyone else having problems with .wmv files?
