WDC WD30EFRX - Error code sense_key=0x0, asc=0x0, ascq=0x0, CDB=2a 00 99 66 a9 f0 00 f0 00

Hi All,

I bought 2 3tb Red drives this month. 1 to replace my 1.5tb drive in my Qnap TS-110 NAS and the other to use as a backup.

I installed a 3tb hard drive in my NAS and then used the usb port via a caddy to connect my other 3tb drive to backup using raid 1 (Q-raid 1).

After about 30mins I get this error - [HDI_ROO] I/O error, sense_key=0x0, asc=0x0, ascq=0x0, CDB=2a 00 99 66 a9 f0 00 f0 00.

The USB drive is then disconnected. I cycle the power on the caddie and it carries on backing up for around 30mins before the same happens again.

I connected the drive up to my pc (win 7) and did a full surface scan (chkdsk) with no errors. I also used Western Digital Data LifeGuard Diagnostics and it passed the quick test.

Test Option: QUICK TEST
Model Number: WDC WD30EFRX-68EUZN0
Unit Serial Number: WD-[Deleted]
Firmware Number: 80.00A80
Capacity: 3000.59 GB
SMART Status: PASS
Test Result: PASS
Test Time: 14:35:50, August 25, 2014

I posted on the Qnap forum too and they pointed me to here. http://forum.qnap.com/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=96912&p=429262#p429262

I’ll run the extended test tomorrow, but any help in the meantime would be greatly appreciated

Thanks,

Dave

A tool such as CrystalDiskInfo or smartctl would be preferable to Data LifeGuard. These tools show the raw values of each SMART attribute whereas DLG does not.

As for the “I/O error, sense_key=0x0, asc=0x0, ascq=0x0”, that is indicating “No error”.

The CDB (“Command Descriptor Block”) appears to be telling you that there was a problem executing a SCSI WRITE(10) command (2ah):
2a 00 99 66 a9 f0 00 f0 00

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SCSI_CDB http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SCSI_command#List_of_SCSI_commands

According to the following “SCSI Commands Reference Manual” (page 232), the host was trying to write 0xF0 sectors to LBA 0x9966a9f0.

Thanks for the help Fzabkar.

The caadie I have I’ve used for other drives and never had a problem, so I’ll post back on Qnap website and see what they come back with.

Thanks again,

Dave
