Hello all!
my cousin took me to give him my old hard drive, since he wanted to open it. I gave it to him. However, he has sometimes forced open (had overlooked 2 screws). When he called me I heard a gas-like odor. I guess from the hydrodynamic bearings. Is this dangerous to your health? We immediately opened the window and put the hard drive out.
It is a Western Digital Caviar 80GB üm WD800BB.

Hi, welcome to the community.

I have never heard about a drive having gas inside (unless is one of the hydrogen drive). Are you sure that you didn’t hear the drive sucking air instead? Or, maybe dust?
