WD50000H1CS-00 500GB My Book no power up

Someone inverted the power of my laptop and my Ext. HDD. The way I noticed is that windows would not detect it so I unplugged, replugged a few times. Then I noticed that the light was not acting normally. After switching back the right plugs in the right place, my HDD wouldn’t power up anymore… The laptop voltage is 19V while the HDD is supposed to be 12V.

Anyone can help restoring the data on the disk?

Is there a protection I can bypass by adding a jumper somewhere?

Can I buy a replacement part anywhere?

Thanks

Try this you’re not the first http://community.wdc.com/t5/My-Book-for-PC/I-Fried-My-Book-help-me-please/td-p/77910  . You would think the plugs would be different sizes for the different voltages.

I read that thread already but the guy ends-up stripping one of the components on his board and it still does not work…

The 12V TVS diode will have failed in an attempt to protect the rest of the board. It does not always succeed. Nevertheless, the board has no chance of working with a shorted diode across the power supply, so you would need to remove it anyway. Check R64 as well.
