I just placed a new WD20EARS in an empty WD Elements 2TB enclosure, attached to my Lenovo T61 Windows 7 64bit Ultimate laptop and formatted the drive using 4096kb allocation units. I did not put a jumper across 7-8. The formatting process took 25 hours. Ran LifeGuard Extended Test and it passed. I plan to run the external HD mainly with XP Pro machines (laptop and desktop), but will occasionally use it with the Windows 7 laptop as well. Should I run WD Align on the drive? I have no machine that will run this as an internal drive.
