Wd2001fass Failing in external enclosure

Hi WD Community,

I am unbelievably pissed off (what a great way to start a thread :-). Just bought a 2TB WD Caviar Black and an external enclosure (a hornettek viper) and hooked it upp via esata.

My previous external hd (Seagate Freeagent Xtreme) started clicking and eventually failed after a few months so this time i decided to splash out on a bit more dough and get a good drive.

Sigh. Now the harddrive spontaneously starts making this sound while the light on the front of the drive turns on and off. It’s still working, just REEEEALY slowly. Turning the drive off and on again seems to fix it temporarily.

And here’s a video i made of the sound. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hhfbLnjPy7g

And here’s a hd tune test while the drive is in this state: http://flic.kr/p/9bqJ2W which is a fair bit different from http://flic.kr/p/99v8Z8

Any ideas? Is it my computer, the enclosure or the hd?.

Thankyou for any help and sorry about the loong post.

are you sure that the external case is giving enough power to the drive ?
