I am trouble shooting my m-in-law’s computer. When she 1st turns on her computer (running XP) she gets a black screen with a bunch of system info. At the bottom it says something about “…IDE Channel 1 Master Hard Disk S.M.A.R.T. Status Bad…” Press F1…F2 for setup. I’ve searched and searched for answers, and one website told me to connect to the mfg of the hard drive which is Western Digital. I’ve runned “chkdsk c: /f” and got a message “correcting error in index $I30 for file 153”, “Sorting index $I30 in file 153”, “Recovering orphanded file … into directory file 153” which there were at least a good 2-3 dozen orphaned files. Currently it has a driver from Microsoft dated 7/1/01 & version “5.1.2535.0”. Could someone please help me.

the hard drive is dying and possibly the reason is from bad sectors
